Festival preview!

We are proud to announce the Artists in Focus of the 2012 Courtisane Festival, who as in previous editions will present their work at the festival as well as that of other filmmakers and artists who have influenced their practice.more

Courtisane is looking for enthusiastic interns and volunteers for the organisation of the next edition of the festival, which will take place between 21-25 March 2012 in various locations across the city of Ghent.

Viva Paradis at CPH:DOX and IDFA

Viva Paradis by Isabelle Tollenaere (Courtisane winner  in 2008 and 2010) will be screened at CPH:DOX as part of the FREE RADICALS programme and at IDFA within the Paradocs selection. Courtisane presented the premiere of Viva Paradis at KASKCinema in September and handles its festival distribution. 

Goodbye Cinema, Hello Cinephilia

Following the publication of the first Dutch translation of the writings of the influential French film critic Serge Daney (published by Octavo), BAM organises a series of events on the state of cinephilia and film critical thinking today in collaboration with Sint-Lukas, KASK and RITS and with the support of Bozar, ERG  and Courtisanmore

Freestate II

From June 25th until September 11th the exhibition FREESTATE II in Oostende will present a survey of the work of 21 young Belgium-based artists (°1976 and later). Courtisane programmers Stoffel Debuysere and Maria Palacios Cruz are part of the curatorial team and have selected the work of Pieter Geenen, Ief Spincemaille, Jasper Rigole and Sung-A Yoon.more

Since the beginning of May, there is a new film theatre in Gent: KASKcinema. Courtisane is one of the various organisations which will contribute to its round the year programme.more

In the context of the Videoex Festival (21-29 May 2011, Zürich (CH)), on the occasion of this year’s special focus on “guest city” Brussels, Courtisane presents four programmes of Belgian works. more

Sylvain George wins award at BAFICI 2011

The final version of Sylvain George's Qu'ils reposent en révolte (Des figures de guerres), which premiered at the Courtisane Festival, was just awarded as best film in competition at BAFICI 2011 (Buenos Aires). Congratulations!

The 10th edition of the Courtisane Festival for film, video and media art closed on Sunday 3rd April 2011. At the award ceremony, the festival jury −  Marina Kozul (HR, organiser/curator), Adam Pugh (UK, curator/writer/organiser) and Vincent Meessen (BE, visual artist/curator) − announced the Belgian and international winners. Directly afterwards the winning works were shown again. more

Robert Beavers at Cinematek

The influential but rarely shown films of Robert Beavers will not only be screened at the Courtisane Festival but also at Cinematek in Brussels where a selective retrospective of his work will be presented the week following the festival, from April 5th to April 9th. Not to be missed!more

Sofie Benoot's Blue Meridian

A recent jury member at Courtisane Festival, young Belgian filmmaker Sofie Benoot  will be presenting her latest work Blue Meridian at Beursschouwburg in Brussels on 24 September. Blue Meridian is Sofie's first long feature documentary film after completing her studies with Fronterismo, also screened at the Courtisane festival. And we can't wait to see it !more

Here we are now!

Beursschouwburg welcomes Courtisane on 13 october for a fundraising event in the context of the S.H.O.W. (Shit Happens on Wednesdays) series. The video programme "Here We Here Now", food & drinks on sale, and Courtisane DJs to dance the night away. Come support Courtisane!

Paul Clipson will be back

Missed Paul Clipson during Courtisane festival? You get a second chance! The man who does wonders with 8mm is coming to Brussels the 25th of september, a coproduction by Bozar and Courtisane. Clipson will be wandering through Europe, you can catch him at Lightcone (Paris), the Dutch Filmmuseum (Amsterdam), Elu par cette crapule (Le Havre) and Cherry Kino (Leeds).more

Courtisane winner at FID Marseille !

Trickland by Isabelle Tollenaere, winner of the national competition of this year's Courtisane festival, will be screened at FID Marseille as part of the thematic programme "Les Sentiers" curated by Nathalie Guimard and Vincent Tuset-Anres (Fotokin).more

Finissage exhibition Digest Sound with Erik Bünger performing

Artist and composer Erik Bünger presents on 11 april (17:00 at Witte Zaal) A Lecture on Schizophonia (=That which makes dogs bark at speakers, children look for the man behind the box and savages demand their captured souls returned) (2008), an audiovisual performance with the formal qualities of a lecture. The term Schizophonia, coined by the sound theorist R. Murray Schaefer in 1977, stems from the nervous split that is created when the sound is separated by its source. Bünger invites us on a travel with clips from popular film and music, where past and present are mysteriously combined.more

Duncan Cambell wins the International Competition a second time with 'Make It New John', after getting the award last year with 'Bernadette'. The winner of the National Competition is also not a stranger to Courtisane. 'Trickland' by Isabelle Tollenaere charmed and convinced the jury the most. This is also the second time Isabelle is the National Competition winner.more

Extra! Baby Matinee Ateljee ...

In collaboration with 'de kijkdoos', Courtisane organises a Sunday afternoon workshop (21.03 13:00-16:30) for children who attend the Baby Matinee screening. And in the meantime, parents can enjoy some of the festival programmes. A not-to-be-missed opportunity! more

The Origin of Painting

The Origin of Painting is a key work in Disinformation's oeuvre, a literally impressive sound and light installation which allows visitors to make an impression of their silhouette. This work not only refers to the myths associated to the creation of painting, but also to the atomic shadows on the walls of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.more

Meet Artist in Focus David O'Reilly at opening festival

David O’Reilly (EI, 1985)kicks off the festival at Sphinx (17.03, 20:00). He is without a doubt one of the rising stars in the animation firmament. Based in Berlin, he evenly divides his valuable energy between commercial work (for, among others, music acts such as U2 and M.I.A.) and utterly personal experimentations which recklessly exploit the potential of 3D computer animation. His “turbodrama” Please Say Something was awarded a Golden Bear at the Berlinale 2009. We're really curious!more
