Cinema is no longer what it used to be. It has left the closed space of the cinema theatre to infiltrate every aspect of our daily life. What isn’t a moving image today? Cinema affects us in the most varied forms, formats and resolutions, each time with different intentions. It persuades us, excites us and plays with our emotions and desires. It creates possibilities and solutions, but also promises and misunderstandings. Cinema plays with its own tradition but also searches for new possible forms, objects and languages.
Within this mosaic of styles, gestures, languages and emotions, Courtisane makes a resolute choice for adventure and reflection. Courtisane showcases and supports works that go in search of their own idiom, rather than following blindly the call of spectacle. Artists that prefer to step into the unknown, in order to discover something new and communicate the feel of the reality that surrounds us. Their work is coloured in subjectivity and experimentation, through a combination of personal engagement and a contemplative gaze.
“Memory” is the red thread that binds together this edition of the Courtisane festival. Different angles and perspectives on the issue are taken into consideration in a broad programme: film and videoscreenings, performances, an exhibition, ... All of this within an open, exciting and welcoming environment. This year, Courtisane goes out into the city. You’ll find us at Arts Centre Vooruit, Cinema Sphinx, de Bank van de Arbeid and Film-Plateau. The city is also the theme and the context for our very own first production...
