Rencontres Audiovisuelles invited Courtisane and gave us a carte blanche to compile a programme that captures the spirit of our own festival. "Somewhere, Sometime" mixes forms and genres (docu, machinima, ...) into an exploration of time and space.
Evolutions
Jani Ruscica, FI, 2008, DigiBeta, 18’

Adolescents talk about their world vision, experiences and history in a studio, free from time and space. Their story mixes with scientific, religious and mythical explanations for the start of the universe.
Fronterismo
Sofie Benoot, BE, 2007, dv cam, 43’00”

Fronterismo invites us to a desolate piece of land between the USA and Mexico. A meditative atmosphere sketch, set in a background of highways, ghost cities and invisible borders, that listens to the stories of locals.
Rehearsals for Retirement
Phil Solomon, US, 2009, HD, 15'

An in memoriam for Mark Lapore, made with the popular game Grand Theft Auto.
A Letter to Uncle Boonmee
Apichatpong Weerasethakul, TH, 2009, video, 18’

A slowly moving camera captures the interiors of various houses in a village. They are all deserted except one house, where a group of young soldiers digs up the ground. It is unclear whether they are exhuming or burying something... Filming in Nabua in northeastern Thailand, site of a 1965 battle between communist farmers and the totalitarian government, Apichatpong employs an incantatory omniscient narration to evoke repression and hope.
