The Linguistics of Faith

How to talk about things one does not see, how to speak of things one does not hear? Gertrud David’s commissioned work about a Christian home for deaf-mute and blind children can also be read as an accurate registration of how language is acquired by those who have minimal sensual interconnection with the world. Richard Leacock‘s and Marisa Silver’s Community of Praise may be the portrait of a Christian fundamentalist community in the U.S. midwest, but it is also a document of the need to continuously articulate and verbalize one’s faith for it to stay alive.
