Taking its title from a reflection on warfare by Greek philosopher Heraclitus, Fragment 53 presents itself as a moment of critical confrontation with the values that war implies and expresses. Tribbioli and Lodoli investigated a series of violent internal conflicts that intermittently took place in Liberia from 1989 to 2003. Their feature length debut, for the biggest part, consists of first-person accounts by a group of eminent warriors, generals and warlords who fought in in the country’s civil wars, which were collected between 2011 and 2014. They articulate their nightmarish experiences in an unsettlingly dispassionate manner. Any personal context is excluded from their tales in order to elevate them to a wider and ubiquitous dimension.
