De ravissante en elegante Super-8 films van Paul Clipson zijn lyrische exploraties van licht en beweging. Zijn beelden, grotendeels à l’improviste gemonteerd in de camera, onthullen de energie, sensualiteit en ritmes waar we in het alledaagse leven al te vaak blind voor blijven. In zijn gelaagde studies schemert de invloed door van experimentele filmmakers zoals Stan Brakhage, Marie Menken, Bruce Conner en Bruce Baillie, maar ook van de talloze klankkunstenaars en muzikanten met wie hij geregeld samenwerkt, zoals Jefre Cantu-Ledesma, Gregg Kowalsky en William Fowler Collins. Voor de gelegenheid wordt een selectie van zijn recent filmwerk voor het eerst begeleid door een live geïmproviseerde soundtrack van Bram Devens (alias Ignatz) en Paul Labrecque (alias Head of Wantastiquet, Sunburned Hand of the Man). Beide muzikanten bouwen met hun bezwerende klankexploraties eigengereid voort op de “American Primitivism” traditie, waar vooral de geduchte, nietsontziende geest van John Fahey in rondwaart.

Paul Clipson: “My interest is to create strokes or lines as one draws on a piece of paper, but because film introduces the element of TIME, these strokes and their position in time is not necessarily known when you make them. I work in a way that layers the images, like strokes of a brush floating in my mind as I make them. I don’t actually control the images I make. Because of the chemical process of film, you record things and then you process the film and see it a couple of weeks later, so it’s like you’re writing down collected experiences, putting them into an envelope and mailing them off…”.
