“I have always tried to make my photoplays present the truth, to lay before the race a cross section of its own life, to view the colored heart from close range. My results might have been narrow at times, due perhaps to certain limited situations, which I endeavored to portray, but in those limited situations, the truth was the predominant characteristic. Percussionist William Hooker verkent reeds vele decennia free music met zielsverwanten als David Murray, David Ware, Thurston Moore, Zeena Parkins, Elliot Sharp, Christian Marclay en anderen. In deze performance begeleidt hij live een belangrijke en invloedrijke film van Oscar Micheaux, één van de eerste Afrikaans-Amerikaanse filmmakers die stereotypes en racistische representaties van ‘blackness’ uitdaagde en ontwrichtte. Deze vergeten regisseur, producent, distributeur en auteur realiseerde meer dan 40 onafhankelijke films. In Body and Soul (1925) speelt de legendarische en activistische acteur Paul Robeson een dubbele rol als een corrupte dominee en een goedaardige uitvinder. Het was de enige keer dat hij in zijn carrière met een zwarte regisseur kon werken.
