Chuyia is eight, a widow, and condemned for life to an ashram. But it’s 1938 and India is changing: among the ashram women Chuyia meets romantic Kalyani and theologian Shakuntala. Like Gandhi, who arrives in Varanasi at the end, they challenge what seem like elemental laws. Rising up through watery hues, Mehta’s film retains its controversial power.
