Pervading Animal
Graeme Arnfield, 2021, UK, DCP, 30'

Whilst seeking the outer limits of the saturated image Graeme Arnfield tells the unearthed, peculiar story of AIDS, one of the earliest examples of ransomware. The computer virus was authored by the biologist Dr. Joseph Popp with a code modelled on how HIV spreads through the human body. Working with a range of digitally manipulated found footage, Arnfield explores the legacy of Popp’s virus, drawing surprising connections to the US invasion of Panama, the construction of a butterfly conservatory in New York and the aesthetics of computational art.
