Ter lancering van de publicatie Ecstatic Dislocation: Slip-Syncs, Collapse, and Strange Unrealities in the films of Sogo/Gakuryu Ishii, uitgegeven door Courtisane als deel van de Echoes fo Dissent reeks, introduceert auteur Jennifer Lucy Allan op 23 april Ishii’s Crazy Family (1984) in de Cinematek.
Jennifer Lucy Allan is schrijver, onderzoeker en presentator. Ze behaalde een doctoraat aan CRiSAP (UAL) over de sociale en culturele geschiedenis van de misthoorn, wat de basis vormde voor haar eerste boek, The Foghorn’s Lament (White Rabbit Books, 2021). Ze is ook presentatrice van Late Junction op BBC Radio 3 en freelance muziekjournalist, gespecialiseerd in underground- en experimentele muziek. Voorheen was ze online redacteur voor The Wire en nu werkt ze als freelancer voor The Wire, The Quietus, The Guardian en anderen. Ze is mede-eigenaar van de platenlabels Arc Light Editions en Good Energy en lid van Laura Cannells Modern Ritual Collective en het Cafe OTO Experimental Choir. Onlangs publiceerde ze haar tweede boek, Clay: A Human History (Pegasus Books, 2024).

You can talk about Ishii and music and you can talk about Ishii and sound. I want to talk about both. I want to talk about him as a node in a network of musicians and bands, that starts with punk but spider webs out to ensnare post-punk, industrial and ambient music, with a brief free jazz cameo. I also want to talk about the way he uses sound, rhythm and silence.
This is not just about soundtrack. A soundtrack tends towards telling you something about what’s happening. Soundtracks tell you what to feel, whether there is dread, or romance, or sadness in a scene. Not so for Ishii. For Ishii a soundtrack stands alone, is a bed and is a moment, but it doesn’t tell you how to feel. It is, in Ishii's hands, dislocation, silencing, or distortion of the cause-effect connection; between the punch thrown and the punch landing; between moving image and the sound that constructs the conceits of the cinema. Trouw aan zijn extravagante stijl, tekent Sogo Ishii met Crazy Family voor een losgeslagen komedie met een vleugje zwarte humor, die de heilige instelling van het gezin in Japan aanvalt. In deze home invasion, waarin de dreiging van binnenuit komt, doorbreekt de filmmaker de vooroordelen over gezinsgeluk -- een verkapte nachtmerrie die zijn personages uiteindelijk verstikt. Crazy Family, een invloed die Takashi Miike claimt voor zijn Visitor Q, is een vermakelijk slachtfestijn met een kinetische soundtrack doordrenkt van een ware punkspirit.
