Joseph Kamaru, beter bekend als KMRU, is een in Nairobi geboren geluidskunstenaar en producer die momenteel in Berlijn verblijft. Voor KMRU fungeert geluid als een zintuiglijk medium waarmee hij politieke, materiële en conceptuele dimensies verkent. Puttend uit een rijke waaier aan luisterervaringen in Nairobi en daarbuiten, breidt hij zijn sonische praktijk uit om een verhoogd bewustzijn van zijn omgeving te creëren. Dit doet hij door middel van creatieve composities, installaties en performances. Hij werkte reeds samen met onder andere Niamké Désiré alias Aho Ssan, Freya Edmondes alias Elvin Brandhi en Kevin Martin alias The Bug, en bracht werk uit op prestigieuze labels als Mego, Touch en Subtext. Daarnaast eert hij zijn grootvader en naamgenoot, Joseph Kamaru — de beroemde Keniaanse activist en Benga-muzikant — door zijn muziek opnieuw uit te brengen en zijn nalatenschap van sonische storytelling voort te zetten.
“Different places have identifiable sonic identities relating to their specific locations and the auditory culture of the place. We are influenced by the environments we live in, but mostly not aware of them. This became apparent to me when I first traveled to Berlin and realised how different its sonic identity is from Nairobi. Sounds communicate the different senses and properties of the respective cities: Berlin has more motor sounds, while Nairobi has more sounds of people. We experience these sounds on a daily basis and it is important that we know how they affect us. If they change, they might indicate that something is different, and if we are attentive, we will notice it.”
